You can use these strategies to help you understand text. Also, using reading strategies will help you understand questions and writing prompts.
These strategies were brainstormed by Grade 5/6 :
RE-READ as many times as it takes to understand.
Graces example reading a non-fiction text:
- read the first time and it made no sense at all
- Reread the second time and was still not completely clear.
- Reread the third time and I STOPPED and THOUGHT about things after each small chunk I read.
Read out loud- it helps you stay focused on the text (less mind wandering!)
Visualize it! If you can 'see' it, you can understand it!
Summarize the main points and supporting details as you read. (Claudio advises to use a GO MAP for fiction and Point/Detail jot notes for non fiction)
Connect to what you already know......OR......think about what is logical!
